R.I.P - The Godfather Of Disco - Mel Cheren

Where the sun sets and the stars rise…Sadly the Godfather of Disco Mel Cheren passed away yesterday.
If you like disco & soul it’s hard to imagine that you won’t have danced & listened to something Mel had a hand-in be it a release on Scepter or West End Records, a b-side instrumental or a Disco 12… and for this contribution we will always be thankful to Mel.
Mel Cheren began his career in the music business via ABC/Paramount Records where he eventually became head of the label’s production department. When the company moved operations to Los Angeles in 1970, Cheren left to become head of production for Scepter Records. Here the musical innovator forged new territory: he was instrumental not only in supporting the creation of the first 12″ single for DJs and in forming the first record pool, but also the first to release an instrumental mix on a 12″ B-side (”We’re On The Right Track” by Ultra High Frequency). Other hits during his tiime at the label included B.T. Express’ “Do It Till You’re Satisfied,” and Patti Jo “Make Me Believe in You”
When Scepter closed in 1976, Mel co-founded West End Records and soon after signed Karen Young, whose single “Hot Shot” sold 800,000 copies making it one of the biggest selling 12″ in history.Disco hits followed from the likes of Jakki, Taana Gardener, Loose Joints, Barbara Mason & Ednah Holt featured here with the club mix of “Serious Sirius Space Party”.
To top it all Cheren, was the financial backer of The Paradise Garage one of the world’s most famous nightclubs.

TRAGEDY @ CARL COX gig Red Noise, Venezuela !

Four people were shot dead at a Carl Cox concert on Saturday in Venezuela after a gunman starting shooting in the crowd.
There are reports on the web that nine people were also injured, and grisly footage of the aftermath was posted on YouTube by the VJ who was playing at the gig at La Rinconada Terrace in Caracas, Venezuela.

On a VJ Forum, VJ Rei from Venezuela described the attack and said he saw three dead bodies on the dancefloor:

“Last night, 15 meters from me when Carl Cox started his show and 10 minutes into it someone started to shoot everyone. It sounded like firecrackers, it was so fast I didn’t think it was a gun.
“Everybody started to run like crazy.
“I was in the main booth, doing my visuals and filming the show.
I just grabbed the camera and started to film everything that was going on.
”The film has now been removed from YouTube.

Carl Cox was headlining the event called Red Noise, and on Monday this statement was posted on his website Carlcox.com

“I am deeply shocked and still stunned by the events of this Saturday [3rd November]
“My condolences go out to victims that were caught up in this horrific act that took place at this gig.“
I am informed that it was gang related and feel so sad that anybody would act in such a manner when the event was full of 7000 people having fun!
“I will try my best to continue on the tour across South America however deeply shocked and shaken I am.”

"Our condolences go out to the people that fell victim to this hideous act.Its deeply shocking to hear about this kind of thing going on with all those innocent people there such a tragic end lets hope this kind of thing never happens again and people can still party and have fun without living in fear of something so catastrophic happening again our condolences go out to the people and there family's. RC"
